I keep harping on about how the creative process can show you so much about how you approach life and any theme that you’re working on. And, honestly, I’m not sure if anyone gets what I’m saying. So I thought it would be fun to show you on one of my own creative projects.
This is a mixed media project on abundance, inspired by the amazing Sarah Leonard. It’s something that we did in The Creation Space. And after I saw how much learning was going on, we will definitely be doing lots of creative projects every month. This took me about an hour in total – just so you know that creativity doesn’t have to take forever.
Here’s what I learned from my creative process:
1) I spend time on the things that seem easy (like fooling around on social media) rather than tackling the substance of my work (like creating courses or other content that people would love). When I was creating the first layer, my background, I wasn’t sure when to stop and get to the ‘substance’ of making my ABUNDANCE letters. Fooling around with the background seemed easier so I continued.
2) Abundance for me comes from various sources, this is what feels right. I decided to cut out each letter and glue it on separately. I knew that I would be able to put them together into a whole somehow, and that it would be perfect.
3) The abundance I dream of can’t come in fully yet because what I have in place is not big enough to hold it. When I started gluing the letters onto the background, they didn’t fit! When I asked why, it was because my background wasn’t big enough. To me this meant that I know how to aim high, but I am not ready to accept what I’m asking for yet. I feel that I have work to do, on being able to receive abundance and on putting in systems and structures that will create space for it in my life.
4) I am super impatient when it comes to success and get frustrated when things take too long. I had problems with the word success, both when lettering and painting around it afterwards. It just felt SO long, both times I ended up losing focus and just doing whatever, which of course meant that it didn’t look like I wanted it to look. Message received! 🙂 As an additional insight, I originally used only shades of orange for success and had to add another color to make it stand out clearly. The right color was blue, which is a ‘heavenly’ color. Orange is an ‘earthly’ color, and I needed both to make my success happen. Interesting…
5) Adding my own special kind of sparkle feels good, and I need to do more of it. I only relaxed into the process at the final stage when I added loads of glitter and sparkly stickers. This addition of something of ‘me’ was the fun part, and I wondered why I didn’t add sparkle to my background, why did I wait until the end? To me this was a message to add sparkle and fun to the systems and structures I am creating now, I don’t have to wait until I am successful to add a lighter energy.
