Oracle cards are the best way I know to get started working with your intuition. They are widely available, they’re easy to use and they’re fun. People use them in lots of different ways, but I think that learning how to use oracle cards specifically to connect with your intuition is one of the best things you can do for yourself. When you know how to get guidance from your soul everything is so much easier!

If you have any doubts about using oracle cards, don’t worry, that’s normal. In general, our culture values logical thinking over intuitive knowing, and you may instinctively think that oracle cards are a bit silly or that something that simple could never work. If you’re intrigued, try them anyway! Curiosity is one of the ways in which your soul communicates with you, so your curiosity about oracle cards is a soul nudge. Following soul nudges leads you to joy and fulfilment, so why not let yourself explore and see what happens?

In this blog post I’ve answered the oracle card questions that people ask me most often. If you have any other questions about how to use oracle cards, feel free to send them over and I’ll add them to the post. You can contact me via the turquoise chat box in the bottom corner of every page.

What are oracle cards?

Like tarot cards, oracle cards are a divination tool. This doesn’t mean that they tell the future, but that they show you what you already know deep down, at soul level. They are a tool that  anyone can use to receive guidance from their intuition.

Each card will include some kind of image, words or a combination of these, to help the reader formulate the answer to the question they asked. There are all kinds of oracle cards, with all kinds of artwork on them. Some have more words on them than others. Some have colorful pictures and some look more like sketches. Honestly, when it comes to the world of oracle cards there is something for everyone.

Oracle cards are not the same as tarot cards. Whereas tarot card decks all have the same structure, oracle card decks are all different. Because of this, I find that they’re easier to get started with. To use tarot cards you have to first understand the symbolism that’s used in each deck, and go from there. With oracle cards there’s nothing to learn, all you need to do is pull a card and practice interpreting the message.

How do oracle cards work?

Oracle cards help you to bypass the thinking mind and dig deeper into the wisdom you hold within you. You hold this wisdom at the soul level, as what we call ‘intuition’. The problem is that those intuitive answers aren’t always easy to see, because the logical thinking mind gets in the way. It thinks it’s running the show after all!

Why does the thinking mind get in the way? Because it doesn’t have the full picture of what’s possible for you and how to achieve it. The thinking mind is limited by what it has seen and believes to be true. It’s running a particular story, and literally filters out everything that doesn’t match that story. For example, if your mind believes that life is hard, it will filter out any evidence of life being easy. So you won’t notice it, even if it’s right there in front of you!

Oracle cards help you see what your conscious mind can’t see. They help you go beyond the thinking mind and its limitations. They help you access what your soul knows to be true about you, your path and purpose in this lifetime, how the universe works, and how to live your highest potential.

How to use oracle cards? Ask them a question! By asking oracle cards a question, you’re choosing to access a part of you other than the mind. You’re getting your information from a source other than logic. You’re adding soul wisdom and intuition into the mix. You’re being soulsmart.

Do oracle cards tell the future?

Like all divination tools, oracle cards can give you a glimpse of the future, but only the future as it’s likely to unfold from where you're currently standing. The thing about the future is that it’s not set in stone, we’re co-creating it right now. So any answer you get to a question about the future can change as soon as you start moving again.

Here’s an example. When I was 24 or so I went to a psychic for the first time ever. One of my major concerns was an exam I was preparing for, and I wanted to know if I’d pass it. I asked her, and she said I would, but also explained how this future-telling thing works. She said that right now, in this moment, based on the choices I had made in the past, the path led to me passing my exam. But if I walked out of there that night and made a totally different choice, that trajectory could change. In my case, the message was clear. Up until that point I’d chosen to study a lot and so my path led to a passing grade.  If I left the consultation that night confident that I would pass because the psychic said so and therefore stopped studying, I could change my trajectory.

This is how we create our future in the current moment, with the choices we make. So any reading of the future is based on the choices we have made up until that point. Which means that you can use oracle cards to ask about the future, as long as you also understand that the future is always malleable!

Choosing your first oracle card deck

Choosing your first oracle card deck is exciting! I always say that you should choose the one that speaks to you most, the one that seems to be calling out to you. When you look through the available oracle card decks, either physically in a store or online, there will be one or a couple that stand out to you. Maybe you love the artwork of a particular deck, or maybe something about the name really appeals to you. Or maybe you like a particular one and you can’t explain why. All of these are perfectly valid reasons to choose one deck over another.

This is really the most important thing: trust yourself to choose the perfect first deck for you. Only you can know which one is right. Choosing your first oracle deck can be the first intuitive decision you make! Yay! 🙂

The first deck I ever bought was the Wisdom of Avalon by Colette Baron-Reid. I’d been really into all the Arthurian legend at the time and was particularly interested in the priestesses and the magic. When I discovered that a deck using this imagery existed, I knew it was the right one for me.

A good friend chose a spirit animal deck as her first one, because she was intrigued by the idea of animal wisdom. Another chose a deck whose art work reminded her of a connection with American Indian tribes. And their cases and in mine, there was some kind of personal connection or curiosity about a particular deck. And this is what made these particular decks perfect for the people who chose them!

How many decks do you need?

I’ve become a bit of an oracle card addict over the years, so I’m not sure ‘need’ comes into my buying decisions anymore. At this point, many people would probably say that I have too many decks, but I love and use them all so it’s ok.  I also have several gorgeous ones still on my wishlist, so I know that my collection is still growing!

The number of decks you’ll have in your own collection will totally depend on your needs, your personality and on how often you want to use them. I use different decks for different reasons, and so I like to keep a wide variety at hand.

When I do readings, I find that the deck that I ‘happen’ to choose to deliver a particular message is already significant. When I choose a deck that’s all about nature and the earth, I already know that the person I’m reading for needs more grounding in physical reality. When I choose a deck that delivers really simple messages, I know that the person I’m reading for has been over-complicating something and needs more simplicity in their life.

As always, trust yourself to know what to buy and whether to get more. Start with one, work with it for a while, and then see if another calls out to you.

Questions to ask your oracle cards

You can use your oracle cards for guidance on a wide variety of subjects, anything really. The easiest question to start with is “What do I need to know most today?”. Ask yourself this question in the morning, and then pay attention to how the message shows up throughout your day. It may show up as you expect, or it may show up in surprising ways! In either case, it’s always interesting to see how the message and your day fit together.

The one thing to watch out for is yes/no questions. Don’t ask these! Firstly, because your oracle cards aren’t designed to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’. They’re designed to show you an aspect of the situation that you’re not seeing, or to get you back into soul alignment. If you expect them to give you a straight ‘yes’ or ‘no’ then you’ll be frustrated and disappointed when you don’t get one.

It’s really important to remember that your oracle cards are just a tool that helps you communicate with your soul, your intuition. They are not there to tell you what to do. This means that you need to be careful about how you word your questions, so that you’re not expecting the cards to solve all your problems.

Ask questions knowing that what you’re asking for is guidance, not instructions. Make sure that you keep your power at all times, and that you don’t give it away to some unseen force. You can get plenty of guidance on pretty much any situation, but the decision on what to do next is still yours to take.

How to use oracle cards to connect with your intuition

Using oracle cards takes practice, and that’s good news. It means that the sooner you get started the quicker you’ll make progress!

When I started, I literally bought my first deck and then picked a card every morning. I asked what I needed to know or pay attention to most that day. In the evening, I would look at the card again and think about my day, to try and see what my intuition had been trying to tell me. When you’re starting out, sometimes it’s much easier to decipher the message in retrospect!

Before you start, remember that you’re using your oracle cards to connect with your intuition, the deeper part of you that has more wisdom than your conscious mind. In essence, you’re using your oracle cards to connect with your soul, to get access to answers that you’re not aware you have.

How to use oracle cards - here's exactly what you need to do:

  1. 1
Phrase your question - stay away from yes/no questions, oracle cards can’t tell you what to do. Some good questions include ‘what am not seeing right now?’, ‘what’s the best way to approach this situation?’ or simply ‘what do I need to focus on most right now?’.
  2. 2
Shuffle your cards -  I like to close my eyes to help my concentration.
  3. 3
Pick the card that feels right. You may think that you don’t know how to recognise the right card, but you do. Trusting your impulse to pick a particular card takes time so don’t worry if this part feels uncomfortable. Trust is a matter of practice and there’s no shortcut. You simply need to pick lots of cards and you’ll get better at recognising what the right ones feel like!
  4. 4
Relate the card you pulled to your question. This is really important, most people forget about the exact question they asked and therefore don’t get the full meaning of the card they pull! For example, if you asked ‘what should I focus on right now’ and you pulled a card that said ‘abundance, your message isn’t that abundance is coming your way, it’s to focus on abundance next.

Getting the most out of your oracle guidance

Pulling your oracle card isn’t the end of the process! Think of the card you pull as a starting point instead. Take the card’s message and ask yourself: if I were to follow this guidance, what would I do? If you pulled a card that said ‘abundance’, maybe you need to examine your money beliefs or take a business course. If you pulled a card that said ‘trust’, maybe you need to just keep doing what you’re doing and trust that the results are coming. If you pulled a card that said ‘Pause’, maybe you need a break.

Remember that you’re using your oracle cards to get guidance from your higher self, your intuition. Guidance always needs to be followed up by action, otherwise it’s just information. Just like reading a book won’t change your reality, receiving guidance won’t change anything either. You need to take the next step and ACT on the guidance.
