Each and every day, your energy is your main resource. People say that time is your greatest resource but I'm not sure that’s true. If you have lots of time but no energy then that time won’t matter… unless of course you use it to address your energy needs. 😉
Protecting your energy is a basic skill that few of us have. I don’t quite understand why the things I learned at school include trigonometry and how to dissect a frog, but they don’t include how to take care of my energy so that I can thrive in the world and actually feel good. And yet, this is the reality for most of us, and energy management is a skill we have to kind of pick up along the way.
‘Energy management' is basically ‘you management’. When I talk about your energy, I'm talking about the essence of you. I'm talking about who you really are at your very core. I'm talking about that inner, deep, wise part of you that knows what it needs, what it wants, and how to feel good. It’s the part of you that goes after wild dreams and the part of you that knows when to hibernate. It’s you when you’re feeling fulfilled and enjoying your life. It’s you when you’re feeling aligned and in flow.
So when we talk about protecting your energy, we’re essentially talking about how to protect you and how you feel from the onslaught of the outside world. From anything or anyone that saps it, that makes you feel not good enough, that makes you feel depleted rather than nourished.
There are lots of small things you can do to protect your energy, and today I want to share 3 of my favorites with you.
1. Check in with yourself - give yourself what you need
One of my favourite questions to ask myself and clients is: What do you need most right now? It’s so very simple and yet so few people actually do it! Taking the few seconds it takes to close your eyes and ask this question is so worth it, because you might be pushing through life and not really aware of what it is that you need most right now. Of course, the problem with this is what happens after you ask… will you give yourself what you need or not? I vote for yes. 🙂
2. Tune into your own wisdom - pick an oracle card
But don’t just pick one, give yourself 5 minutes to write about what the card makes you think of or brings up for you. You know, this whole email is a product of me picking a card today. The card was about boundaries and so I considered what my own boundaries are and whether I'm clear on them and where they need to be tightened. Then I thought to myself that maybe you need to hear some of what I came up with too, and I started writing this. Sometimes it’s hard to logically identify what we need to consider or what we’re really feeling underneath all the to-do lists of our life. Oracle cards take the pressure off figuring it out, and allow you to access a different part of yourself, the intuitive part. It’s a really great way to quickly re-connect with yourself and come back to centre. And the more centred you are, the less outside stuff will throw you off balance.
3. Recognise what isn’t yours - send it back, with love
Not all the things you think and feel are yours… especially the ones that feel awful. We all carry a lot of other people’s beliefs, projections and expectations, especially from childhood. If you have thoughts that feel bad, question them and see where they come from. For example, if you find yourself thinking that you should lose weight and it feels horrible, question whether this desire is coming from you or from conditioning from your family or society in general about what you should look like. If you identify a belief or expectation that’s not yours, send it back. All I do when this happens to me is imagine the idea actually travelling through space (and sometimes time) to whoever I picked it up from. I send it back with love, but I definitely send it back. Because when it comes to which beliefs I carry around with me, I have a choice, and so do you.
What do you think? Which one of these resonates most right now? Let me know in the comments below!

Joanna, I love your writing and your topics. This piece is absolutely correct. I am not sure what oracle cards are– like Tarot? But #3, “recognize what isn’t yours and send it back with love”– A great tool for all our toolkits. Thanks for a great piece.
Yes! Oracle cards are like tarot but easier to use, there’s no system that they’re all based on. There are so many gorgeous decks, too, I talk about them in a couple of posts, you might find them helpful 🙂

Many people talk about time-management. I’m a believer in task management rather than time management. After all, time is God’s domain, not man’s.
You reminded me of a concept Jim Rohn pushed during his lifetime. He counseled us to manage our energy as we grow older. I agree that protecting our energy is a form of self-care… a way to nurture our core selves.
I like that you gave 3 tips. Instead of #2, I choose to consult the Bible.
Yes, I completely agree that managing our energy is a form of self-care. And I love that you’ll consult the Bible instead of oracle cards – a beautiful way to make the practice yours.
