I get this question all the time, and am not sure I can answer it entirely truthfully or completely.
The thing is that I can’t possibly know for sure. While here in this physical space, I don’t think we can comprehend the vastness and enormity of what they are, or of what we are.
So I thought I would write the answer as a series of bullet points, to list all the things that I have learned about them on my journey so far.
Here it is, a list of a few things that Spirit Guides are:
- They are energy. They are made of the same energy as you and me, and the same energy as the universe. They are co-creators, just like you and me. They are part of Source energy, just like you and me.
- They are souls who stayed behind. From what I understand about how we choose our life, there is a lot of designing that takes place so that we can learn what we need to learn at this point in our soul’s development. Some of the souls that we are close to come with us as our parents, partners, friends etc and some stay behind and help us from the other side. The ones that stay behind act as our guides.
- They are teachers, in the sense that that they currently have more knowledge and understanding than we do. They can show us a wider perspective, they can help us see things in a different way. They know what we came here to learn and experience, so they understand that things are exactly as they should be.
- They are your equals. This is what I was told in a channelled session recently, and I’d never thought of it this way, it blew my mind. You and your guides are completely equal, the only difference is that they remember who they are and you do not. Once you understand that you too are an infinite limitless being, you will see your guides in a different light and your relationship can become more empowering.
- They are guides, which means that they guide you. They are not there to tell you what to do, or to make choices for you. They are not there to blame when things go differently to what you imagined. They guide you to go in the direction you chose when you came here, so that you fulfil the goals you have at soul level.
And a few things that Spirit Guides are not:
- They are not your boss. They guide you, and it is your choice whether to follow their advice or not. The responsibility for action is always yours.
- They are not your relatives who passed away in this lifetime. I’m sure there can be exceptions, and it is true that a close person that passes away sometimes communicates with you after they pass, but they are usually not your Spirit Guides. Your guides are either energies that have been with you since you were born, or energies that are only guiding you during a specific lesson. So your beloved grandma is probably not one of your guides, though a relative from a previous lifetime may well be.
- They are not evil beings trying to control you. You made a choice to live this lifetime at soul level, and at that level you made your agreements with your guides. There might be low-level energies out there, I’m not sure, but your guides are not them. You can trust them because your highest self chose them, agreed to them guiding you. Your guides are made of the energy of love, just like you, there is no need to fear them.
