I haven’t been great at honouring my wellness commitment lately, largely because I’ve been in California for the past few weeks and can’t resist the junk food I remember from my childhood. I grew up in New York and have only been back to the States a few times since then. When I see certain foods, I am immediately transported back to when I was 10 and getting ready for a school trip by stocking up on candy. My husband keeps rolling his eyes as he watches me buy Cheetos, Red Hots and Jolly Ranchers. I guess if you didn’t grow up with those things they have zero appeal.
But we’ve been enjoying another side to California food too, the fresh and healthy side. For me, this is mostly Mexican food, which I absolutely adore. I could eat tacos like the ones below every single day for the rest of our vacation. I got these at a place called the Big Sky Cafe in San Luis Obispo – fantastic place with loads of choices, so not everyone had to have Mexican. Definitely go there if you’re ever in the area!

The only problem we’ve had with food in California is the portions. Everyone complains about this, but in some places the portions really are ridiculous so I’ll complain too. I ordered a salad at the Cheesecake Factory and I couldn’t even finish half. My four-year-old’s reaction to everything we order is ‘Why is it so big?’. We’ve learned to order from the ‘light meals’ menus instead, but not everywhere has them. These portions must translate into enormous amounts of food wasted – I know some people take what they leave away for the next day, but that’s not always possible, especially for tourists. I don’t really understand the advantage of these portion sizes – who benefits?
So, back to wellness. I re-commit to including wellness in the rest of my vacation. As soon as I finish my candy. 🙂

Lots of love,

P.S. Weekend Wellness is my weekly date with myself to make sure that I include wellness in my life. It’s part of creating my life with intention – if I want to lead a healthy life then I have to consciously do things that are healthy. The best way to start living with intention is to follow your intuition – start now and get this FREE 10-step course on connecting with intuition!

As a native Californian, I complain about the portions too. The portions can be really ridiculous in places all over the country. I cringe sometimes when I think of the food being wasted and the fact that there are so many people who go hungry every day.
Your tacos look so GOOD!!
They are HUGE! But I suppose they’re like that all over the country, it’s something that has to be sorted on a larger scale. And the tacos were AMAZING. I’m sorry we didn’t go back a third time!
Where in California are you?
