Beltaine (or Bealtaine as it's spelled here in Ireland)  is the Celtic festival that falls on May 1st, halfway between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. It's a threshold moment — full of magic, possibility, and growth.

Ancient Beltaine celebrations understandably focused on fertility and the land, which may not feel as directly relevant to our modern lives. But the energies of this season — growth, creative awakening, beauty, joy, love — are just as powerful today.

In this post, I’m sharing a few simple ways you can honor Beltaine and invite more of its vibrant energy into your life.

Before I knew about Beltane

When I was growing up, a Polish girl in 1980s New York, I knew nothing about Beltane or its themes. But my family still celebrated the start of summer, with day trips and picnics. For us, the celebration was tied to Labor Day - but really it could have been anything, the point was to spend time outdoors, enjoying the good weather.

I remember it as a happy time of year - school would be out just a few weeks later, and the summer months beckoned. I would be looking forward to long days of reading Sweet Valley High books and staying out late into the evening, catching lightning bugs in the darkness.

The promise of freedom characterised this time of year for me later in life too, the stretch of summer was always something to look forward to, whether it was because there were no classes to worry about or because I got to spend more time with my son.

There’s something about May that feels hopeful and bright. Always has and probably always will.

Looking back, I can see that the spirit of Beltane was always with me, even before I knew it existed. It was in this sense of anticipation that the next few months were going to be awesome, and in the excitement about all the things I wanted to fit in. This is how I approach it these days too.

How to celebrate Beltane

At its heart, Beltane is a celebration of fertility, creativity, manifesting: bringing energy and ideas into physical form. If you’re in the northern hemisphere like I am, you can see evidence of this when you look outside your window or visit your local park. There’s a very specific freshness, and a lushness, to the world right now. There's growth where there wasn't growth before - it's magical!

But there’s so much more to this season, so much more to notice and celebrate. Read on to explore some of the themes I associate with this time of year.

☀️ Notice the growth

Beltaine is a fire festival, and fire symbolises the sun, which is what helps things grow. In Celtic spirituality, it starts the second part of the year that started with Samhain. We have reached the midway point in our annual growth cycle. Maybe some things that we started dreaming about last November have started to sprout, or even blossom. And maybe there are some new things we wish to grow, too.

Here are some journal prompts to play with:

  • how have you grown since last Samhain (November 1)?
  • how do you wish to grow between now and next Samhain?
  • what has manifested in your life since last Samhain? Include desires, insights, lessons, opportunities, anything that comes to mind.
  • what do you still wish to create or step into between now and next Samhain?

🌸 Delight in beauty and joy

One of the things I love about this season is the flowers. I’m not a hugely nature-loving person, but brightly colored flowers really get me. One of my favorite activities right now is visiting garden centers and adding more beautiful blooms to my collection. We have a really big outdoor space so there’s so much room to fill with pots and planters. I’m really enjoying filling them with new flowers, and I love visiting them and admiring their beauty.

I’m being very intentional about joy right now, too. Appreciating my garden is one source for sure, but there are others. Especially when I think not only about today or this week, but about the summer season stretching out before me, and everything I want to fit in. It might be a good idea to create a seasonal bucket list to make sure I get it all out of my head - I love to read seasonally, watch seasonal content, and generally make the most out of every season. Summer has so much to offer, I definitely want to stay present with all its gifts!

Here are some journal prompts to play with:

  • what beauty can you notice and appreciate in your world?
  • what beauty can you add?
  • what would bring you joy this summer season?

❤️ Move through life with love

Beltane is also a celebration of love — not just romantic love (though that can be part of it), but love in all its forms. Love of life, of beauty, of your body, of your people, of your passions. This season invites us to open our hearts — to love more freely, express it more boldly, and receive it more fully.

You might feel called to connect more deeply with someone you care about, or simply to spend time with the people who make you feel lit up and seen. But moving through life with love also means directing it towards yourself — noticing what makes you feel cared for, nourished, and alive.

Self-love is an ongoing journey and practice for me, and I love using Beltane energy to tap into another layer of it. For me at the moment, self-love is about self-kindness and self-compassion. I don't need to make space for a bubble bath, but I do need to talk kindly to myself, especially when I make a mistake or don't meet my own high expectations. I'm just coming out from a rough few months and am making an extra effort to be nice to myself!

Here are some journal prompts to play with:

  • What would it feel like to move through life with love as your guide? What would need to change to match the vibration of love?
  • What part of you is longing to be loved right now?
  • What kinds of self-love do you need to show yourself more of?

🔥 Ignite your creativity

Beltane is a powerful time for creation — not just in the physical or traditional sense, but in the deeply personal, soul-led sense. It’s about allowing what’s within you to take shape in the outer world. That might be a piece of art, a new offering in your business, a personal project, or even just a new way of showing up in your life.

Creativity doesn’t have to look a certain way. You don’t need to paint or write or make anything "official" to be creative. You might express it in how you dress, how you set a table, how you problem-solve, how you tell a story. At its core, creativity is simply the act of allowing what’s alive in you to move — and Beltane offers the fire to help it flow.

Remember: creativity is at the essence of your manifesting power, too. Allowing space for creative projects isn't just about filling leisure time - it's about exercising your ability to shape your reality as well!

Here are some journal prompts to play with:

  • Where am I feeling called to express myself more fully?
  • How does creativity want to show up in my life this season?
  • How can you create a more fertile environment for your dreams to grow & thrive?

🔮 Step through the portal

Beltane is one of the great threshold moments of the year — a powerful turning point. We’re no longer in the quiet dreaming of winter, and we haven’t yet reached the full heat and momentum of summer. This in-between moment carries its own magic. It’s a portal: an invitation to pause, to notice how far you’ve come, and to choose what energy you want to carry forward.

Here are some journal prompts to play with:

  • What are you ready to embody more fully?
  • What’s asking to be left behind?
  • What’s waiting just beyond the threshold, ready for you to step into it?
