There are many ways to connect with your higher self, your soul, your true self. Really, anything that quiets your mind and lets your intuition through works. My favorite way though, the way that's given me the strongest connection, the best results, the most insightful and spot-on guidance, is intuitive art.
Now, don’t get scared here. You may not consider yourself to be artistic or, like me, you may have been repeatedly told that art is for other people because you don’t have the talent. None of this matters - all that matters is that you have a desire to try soul connection through a creative activity.
We are all creative - yes, including you.
In schools, we are often separated into creative and not-creative categories. Creative kids take art, write great essays, join the drama club. Not-creative kids play chess or sports, get great math scores, are directed into science-based careers. Rarely, there are kids who seem to be good at both.
This is silly, because we are ALL creative. But we've equated creativity with result instead of process, and have gotten ourselves into trouble along the way.
Being creative doesn't mean producing a play or a painting or a book.
It means self-expression, and we all have the ability to do THAT.
The highest form of self-expression is the soul expressing itself through you, right now. This is happening, whether you think you're doing something creative or not. You are constantly manifesting your reality, bringing ideas and energy into form. CREATING. Which makes you CREATIVE.
Intuitive art isn't about the art. It's a tool.
The thing that stops most people from leaning into creativity is the attachment to a particular outcome. We want our creations to be beautiful in the conventional sense, to be admired as beautiful by others.
But intuitive art isn't about the end result at all. It's about the process of getting to the end result.
Intuitive art is a communication tool. It’s a symbol, a metaphor, a way of understanding what your soul needs you to know right now, at a time when communication is difficult because you live in a human body, here on Earth.
This kind of art isn't made to be admired as beautiful.
It is made purely to get a message across.
It's functional, rather than decorative.
There are different kinds of intuitive art, for different purposes.
Mandalas are a great way to connect with your soul and get a snapshot of where things are right now, either in general or on a specific topic or question.
Vision boards or collages are great for downloading soul guidance on next steps, or for focus in terms of direction.
Working with clay (or playdoh!) is great for releasing what you no longer want to carry, and for identity work.
Painting is wonderful for connecting with the inner child
Art is such a great personal development tool!
Mandalas connect you to your soul - why is this important?
Because the ego-mind doesn’t know everything, although it thinks it does. It wants you to feel separate to everyone and everything else. Listening to it keeps you unsure, disconnected, sometimes angry and blaming others.
But you’re not separate. Connecting with your soul will help you see your true path, your purpose, your self.
I also believe that your soul knows the best path for you to take through life - it has the blueprint for what's important. Connecting with that part of you will make it easier to make the decisions that will be best for you, and to go in the direction that'll lead to most joy and fulfilment.
Essentially, there's a part of you that knows why you're here and what the best way forward is... why wouldn't you want to listen to what it has to say?
So how does drawing mandalas connect you with your soul?
How it works exactly is a mystery, but like so many things in life, you don’t have to understand if for it to be useful.
‘Mandala’ means ‘circle’ in Sanskrit, and the circle shape is a symbol of the Universe, of wholeness, of our soul journey. Mandalas have been used in all kinds of interesting work, from Buddhist meditation to Jungian therapy. They help you access what cannot be expressed in words.
How can you start using the power of mandalas?
The secret is to set an intention, or ask a question. For example, if you want to explore how to move past a fear of failure, say that when you start. Say something like : “I am drawing this mandala to explore my fear of failure. How can I get past this fear and move forward on my true path?” If you don't have a question, you can simply set the intention to connect with your soul, and see what comes through.
Then, close your eyes and connect with your intention or question for a few moments, until you feel ready.
Make a circle on your sheet of paper (I use a plate turned upside-down) and start drawing whatever feels right (I use colored pencils, whichever colors feel good).
Do not judge, do not think, if your mind starts questioning, gently turn it back to focus on your intention or question. Your mandala doesn’t have to be symmetrical, and it doesn’t have to look like a flower or even anything recognizable. Just draw whatever needs to be drawn.
As you draw, note down any words, phrases or ideas that come to you. These are your messages. This is what your soul, your higher self, wants you to know right now.
When you’re done (you’ll feel when you’re done), look at your mandala. Does anything else come to you? Does it remind you of anything? Does it make you feel a particular way?
You might want to journal for a few minutes and see what insight you get.
And that’s all there is to it.
Will you try it? Have you tried it already? Are you too scared to try it? Is something about my instructions above unclear? Let me know in the comments below, I'd love to chat about this powerful tool!

I haven’t tried a mandela. It’s too neat and geometrical. I’m messy and all over the place. It might be interesting to try though. And a vision board, too.
They absolutely don’t need to be neat and symmetrical. Just follow the process in this post – draw a circle, focus on your question or intention, and see what happens. It’s totally ok that it’s messy, it’ll tell you what you need to know anyway!
I so agree that your soul knows the best blueprint! I haven’t ever tried making a mandala, but I love to stare at them. They feel like portals to me.
ooh I love that description, they ARE like portals!
Joanna, you are an awesome writer. I hope you are secretly, or openly, writing chapters and books! I feel I may be trying your mandala exercise soon. I have some “alcohol pens” in 30 colors that seem like they would be perfect for this. Thanks for the encouragement!
What a lovely thing to say, Kebba, thank you so much! I did plan to write a book but got sidetracked. We’ll see! I hope you do try the mandala exercise, and come back to tell me how you got on!
