birthday magic

The world is divided into two kinds of people – birthday people and the others. I don’t understand the others, the ones who won’t even tell you when their birthday is and definitely don’t want to do anything to celebrate.

I am a total birthday person. It might be because my birthday falls at the end of the year so it’s a natural time to take stock of where I am in life and to make plans for the future. Or it might be that I’ve managed to hold on that little girl that is a part of me, and I let her enjoy her birthday as much as she did when we were 5.

Whatever it is, I LOVE my birthday. I do lots of things to make sure that it is special. Maybe one of them will light up your next birthday?

Birthday Magic: Little Ways To Make Your Special Day Feel Special

  1. Take the day off. Or an hour. Whatever amount of time is feasible to do whatever you want. Last year, I took the day off work and went to a long yoga class. It was amazing to spend the day with just me for company, doing what I know makes me happy but what I don’t always make time for.
  2. Get up early. I’m actually writing this early on my birthday in December 2014, while my family sleeps upstairs. It feels like such a gift, to sit here in quiet, with a cup of coffee and my laptop, taking the time to do something I love, like write.
  3. Invite some friends. Or not. You get to decide! This is a biggie for a lot of people, they feel pressured to do something big for their birthday or to do something at all. I struggled with this myself this year, I felt like I should have a big party because I always have big parties on my birthday. But really all I wanted was to have dinner with a couple of close friends. So that’s what I’m doing. Yay!
  4. Write your future self a letter. I did this for the first time last year, I got the idea from my DailyGreatness Journal, which was my treat to myself last year (see next point).  One of the exercises was to write a letter to yourself, to be opened on your next birthday. I did it and really, really loved reading my letter this morning. So much has changed, I grew so much, it was SO incredible to really see that. I will definitely take the time to write a letter to my next-year self.
  5. Buy yourself presents. Yep, I’ve been doing this for years. Why wait for people to get you what you want? 🙂 I usually keep this to treating myself to a few extras that I’ve been wanting, some books or something like that, but I admit that there have been years when I went overboard on Amazon… so easy to do. 🙂 If you have a birthday coming up and you’d like to treat yourself to something small, I recommend these Amazing Life Workbooks – they are extremely good value and are at the core of how I turned my life around. Or you can treat yourself to a 2015 DreamBoard experience or to some Magic by eMail. Hmmm… maybe I should just do a post about gifts, these are all great Christmas ideas too! 🙂

The point is to do something that will make you smile. Whether you prefer to spend the day on your own or with others, whatever you choose to do, make it something that makes you happy. This is, of course, good advice for every single day of the year. 😉

What are some of your favourite ways to make your birthday feel even more special?
